KINGSTON, Jamaica — A verandah is one of the most useful rooms in a Jamaican house, even when it has no walls. The Rainwater Verandah is an original family-home concept that gives this familiar space another task: gathering rain from a deliberately simple roof and guiding it into safe, maintainable storage.

A roof with a second purpose
The house is a modest single-storey masonry dwelling with a long shaded front edge. Its pitched metal roof is arranged to fall toward an accessible gutter line, with leaf guards, first-flush diversion and a covered tank located on an engineered base. The tank is not decorative. It is placed where householders can inspect it, clean filters and maintain downpipes without climbing over bedrooms. Stored water must be treated appropriately for its intended use, and potable supply needs separate testing and controls.
The roof is securely tied into the structural system for hurricane winds. Overhangs provide shade but are sized and connected with wind uplift in mind. The verandah has durable slip-resistant paving, drainage away from the foundation and a step-free approach where site levels allow. Window placement supports cross-ventilation, while mosquito screening makes evening use more comfortable.
Built for ordinary life
In St Elizabeth or Clarendon, where seasonal dryness makes water management a practical concern, a family might use harvested rainwater for garden irrigation or other approved non-potable uses. The design does not pretend that a tank can solve a community’s water infrastructure problems. Instead, it treats household resilience as something that can be considered early in the building design rather than added awkwardly afterward.
The same verandah becomes a place for homework, neighbours, laundry sorting or sitting with grandparents. Its architectural value is therefore social as well as technical. The Rainwater Verandah is an editorial architectural concept, not a completed or commissioned building. It proposes that Jamaica’s most recognisable domestic space can remain familiar while quietly doing more for the household.
