KINGSTON, Jamaica — The National Housing Trust’s 2026 refund instructions say contributors can receive their contribution refunds only through direct bank deposits, a change from earlier public guidance that also described remittance-agency payments for Jamaicans overseas.
The difference matters for voluntary contributors living abroad who have maintained their eligibility for NHT housing benefits but do not hold an active Jamaican bank account. It does not mean their refund entitlement has been cancelled.
Under the Trust’s announcement issued on December 31, 2025, applications for refunds of 2018 contributions opened on January 1, 2026. The NHT states that collection is currently by direct deposit to a bank account only. Applications must be made through its official online channels.

Earlier guidance offered another route
In January 2025 guidance reported by the Jamaica Information Service, an NHT representative said refunds could be collected through a bank account or remittance agency, including by overseas contributors without active accounts in Jamaica.
The 2026 announcement therefore represents a material difference in the payment instructions available to contributors. The Trust’s current refund information lists participating banks, but does not explain in that announcement why the remittance option is no longer listed or whether a separate arrangement is available in exceptional overseas cases.
Who can claim
Contributions paid in 2018 became eligible for regular refunds in 2026. Eligible contributors may apply during the year or later for contributions that have become refundable. The Trust says its usual processing standard is 15 working days for correctly completed applications, and advises applicants not to submit duplicate claims unless instructed.
Voluntary contributors overseas remain entitled to refunds under the applicable rules, just as other eligible contributors do. The practical issue is how payment can be received when the applicant does not have access to an account accepted by the Trust.
Before applying, overseas contributors should check the latest payment instructions directly with the NHT, confirm which bank-account arrangements are accepted and retain written records of any guidance given. An older application form or previous successful remittance payment should not be treated as confirmation that the same route is available in 2026.
For a housing institution supported by contributions from Jamaicans at home and abroad, clear payment instructions are essential. The outstanding question is how contributors without a suitable bank account can obtain money already due to them without unnecessary delays.
