- The Delhi Development Authority demolished Little Flower Church in Lado Sarai
- The church had served about 1,500 Catholics for 13 years
- Authorities said it encroached on government-owned agricultural land
- Church leaders said no advance notice was given; officials said notices were served
A Catholic church in the Indian capital was bulldozed in July 2021 after authorities declared it an illegal building, Premier Christian News reported on 13 July 2021. Little Flower Church in Lado Sarai, south Delhi, belonged to the Syro-Malabar Diocese of Faridabad and served about 1,500 local Catholics.
The Delhi Development Authority said the structure was illegal and stood on government-owned agricultural land. According to the report, the land had been donated to the diocese about 12 years earlier, and the church had been in use for 13 years. Authorities said notices were “duly served” in line with a 2015 Delhi High Court order.
Church leaders disputed that. Father Ginto K. Tom, public relations officer of the Faridabad diocese, said: “They came this morning and asked our staff to vacate the place, then they demolished the entire church.” He added: “We have been running this church for the last 13 years and there was no such problem until the DDA claimed it was an illegal building.”
Archbishop John Moolachira of Guwahati said: “The Municipal Corporation should have given sufficient time to the Church personnel to take legal recourse before demolition.” The diocese said it would seek legal help.
Whatever the rights and wrongs, the case shows the risk of building on land whose status has not been fully settled. A donated plot may be offered in good faith, but if the donor’s title or the land’s zoning is in doubt, years of worship and investment can disappear in a morning.
In Jamaica, many churches sit on donated or informally acquired land, and some have never been properly titled. The Delhi demolition is a sharp reminder to check the title, the zoning and any government claims before building, and to regularise existing church land now, while it is still possible to do so calmly.
