The Church of Scotland has put nine churches and houses on the market across the north and north-east of Scotland, the Press and Journal reported in April 2026.
Among the churches, Wick St Fergus Church, a B-listed building with a sanctuary, two halls, a creche and a kitchen, closed in December 2024 after 194 years and was listed at offers over £99,000, with suggested uses including a nursery, day centre, museum, art gallery or library. Fraserburgh Old Church, also B-listed and once used as a navigational marker, was offered at over £120,000, its congregation having merged in 2020. Rathen West Church, a C-listed building four miles south of Fraserburgh, was listed at over £55,000, with the graveyard maintained by the council. St Mark’s Church in Aberdeen, built in 1892 and spread over four floors, was offered at over £390,000.
The houses included a four-bedroom detached home at 1 Allan Gardens, Dornoch, at over £390,000; Church House at St Moluag’s on the Isle of Lismore at over £225,000; St Margaret’s Hope Manse in Orkney, a five-bedroom house with sea views, at over £319,000; Finzean Manse near Banchory at over £470,000; and Bettyhill Manse near Thurso at over £235,000.
Several of the churches had already closed or seen their congregations merge with others.
For Jamaican readers, the mix is telling. Old churches sell for relatively little, especially in remote areas, while manses, which are simply good family houses, can fetch several times more. Churches in Jamaica with rectories, mission houses and unused halls should recognise that their residential property may be worth far more than their sanctuaries. For diaspora buyers looking at Scotland or at church property at home, listed status, graveyards and remote locations will all affect price and cost.
