Kingston, Jamaica, 20 June 2026
Today is the last day for students in construction-related fields to apply for the National Housing Trust’s 2026/27 Construction Scholarship, which provides up to $1 million a year per student.
The NHT has been encouraging eligible students to get their applications in, describing the programme as a way to ease financial pressure on students while building the skilled workforce the construction sector will need.

What the scholarship covers
The award pays tuition and, in some cases, accommodation. It is open to students at accredited local institutions studying civil engineering, construction management, architecture, urban and regional planning, quantity surveying and related disciplines.
Donnetta Russell, the NHT’s Assistant General Manager for Human Capital Management, said the aim is to build skills and competencies in construction while encouraging innovation and new talent. She noted that many students struggle to balance their studies with money worries, and that the scholarship lets recipients concentrate on their academic work.
Who can apply
Applicants must be Jamaican citizens with at least a B average or a grade point average of 2.7. They must also show financial need and be involved in extracurricular or community activities. The Trust says it is looking for students who combine academic promise with leadership potential.
Supporting documents include a valid ID, an acceptance letter, an official transcript or status report, CSEC or CAPE results where relevant, proof of extracurricular involvement and a student account statement. Forms are available from the NHT and must be returned by email with all documents by the closing date.
Why it matters for housing
Jamaica’s ability to deliver new homes, and to rebuild after Hurricane Melissa, depends heavily on having enough engineers, architects, planners and quantity surveyors. Investment in training today helps determine how quickly and how well housing can be built in the years ahead.
For families with a student in one of these programmes, the scholarship can make a real difference to the cost of study. Those who miss this year’s window may want to prepare their documents early for the next round.
